As bank secrecy was phased out and regulatory standards tightened \u2013 most notably through the introduction of AEOI in 2017 \u2013 many institutions reassessed their strategies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"474\" data-end=\"667\">This study focuses on 71 Swiss private banks that remained active from 2015 to 2024. It examines how their <strong data-start=\"581\" data-end=\"605\">geographic expansion<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"610\" data-end=\"645\">product\/service diversification<\/strong> impacted performance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"669\" data-end=\"1029\">Banks that successfully expanded both their international presence and service portfolio \u2013 the so-called <strong data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"804\">diversified global players<\/strong> \u2013 demonstrated the highest returns and growth, leveraging scale and reach. In contrast, banks with <strong data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"951\">broad services but limited geographic reach<\/strong> tended to underperform due to high complexity without sufficient market base.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1031\" data-end=\"1269\">Interestingly, <strong data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1072\">focused boutique banks<\/strong> that limited themselves to core offerings and a domestic presence also achieved strong profitability, suggesting that strategic clarity and operational efficiency can compensate for limited scale.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1544\">The study concludes that diversification is not a universal recipe. Swiss private banks must choose between becoming global full-service institutions or highly specialized boutiques.
