Erwin Hettich
Assistant Professor of Strategy and Management
Erwin Hettich is Assistant Professor of Strategy and Management at the Institute of Management and Strategy (IoMS-HSG) at the University of St.Gallen. Professor Hettich studied International Business Administration with a particular focus on strategy and international management at the University of Tuebingen, San Francisco State University and the Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow. He completed his doctorate (Dr. oec.) at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and the Harvard Business School (HBS) in 2015. Professor Hettich has more than 10 years of industry experience and today advises startups and established companies on strategy development.
Professor Erwin Hettich’s research explores topics of interorganizational strategy development, ecosystems, competitive and business model dynamics, and the implications of technology on strategy in organizations. His research has been published in application-oriented publications and academic journals. He is the author of several case studies and the recipient of multiple awards including for the world’s most successful case study on “Tesla – Business Model Configuration”. In 2015, he received the Swiss National Science Foundation grant for his research, which supported his PhD studies at Harvard University. Professor Hettich worked for companies and consultancies in different industries for over 10 years. His practical experience includes various roles in strategy departments of a family office, as well as the construction, engineering, automotive and financial industries. As a Principal Consultant, he has also worked in Digital Transformation consulting for leading companies. Most recently, he was engaged in the field of Venturing and Ecosystems for an insurance group. His teaching activities include lectureships at various universities in student education and executive education. His core topics include Strategic Management and Strategy Basics, Business Model Development, Ecosystems & Platforms, as well as Business Strategy & Competitive Dynamics. In addition, since 2013 he has been involved on a pro bono basis in the education of the Benedictine Order at the Pontifical Athenaeum University of Sant’Anselmo in Rome.
