Research The Institute of Management aims to achieve rigor research and relevance of research for practitioners. Please find an overview on the projects and related researchers below. Activity Systems and their Renewal In recent years, the phenomenon of ‘activity systems’ has come to the forefront of strategy research. Previous scholars have identified interdependencies between activities as crucial to understand the strategic renewal of such complex systems. However, extant literature provides surprisingly few distinct dimensions of interdependence that characterize activity systems and influence strategic renewal success. Corporate Strategy Currently the chair emphasizes research in corporate management. This includes strategic leadership of diversified multi-business firms from the perspective of corporate management. Here, the crucial question is how the corporate management ("Corporate Parent") can add value to its business units. Improving Strategy Efficiency It is commonly said that “Successful strategy is 10% strategic thinking and 90% execution.” Despite this practical wisdom, there is surprisingly little analytical research on strategy execution examining the determinants of strategy execution challenges, how these challenges differ across individuals, teams and organizations, and how overall strategy implementation capabilities can be improved. Our aim is to identify key strategy execution challenges then develop means to overcome them using a multi-level, multiple perspective approach. Management of Acquisition Programs Rather than executing isolated deals, systematic acquirers often execute streams of mutually interrelated acquisitions. Surprisingly, few studies have examined the characteristics and performance consequences of active acquisition behavior, and our understanding of serial acquisition strategies and the organizational requirements to carry them out successfully is quite limited. Our aim is to contribute a more in-depth understanding of how to manage acquisition programs for growth and profitability. Management of Emerging Strategic Issues The identification of the most critical management questions- the appropriate allocation of top management attention and corporate support- is a difficult task. We thus seek to develop strategy practices applicable for both large and small firms that would allow them to seize emerging opportunities and counter emerging threats. Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) From a strategic standpoint, we delve into questions management must confront when engaged in an M&A, which is one mechanism by which growth strategy can be implemented. System Dynamics System Dynamics concerns the modelling, simulation and steering of complex dynamic systems. It is unmatched in its ability to cope with organizational complexity, enabling the development of powerful strategies. Implications of Managing Corporate Programs Multi-business corporations increasingly apply corporate programs to achieve their objectives and create value. With this project, we aim to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon. Strategic Management Our overarching research focus is on Strategic Management. We regularly update our textbooks, accompanying case studies, and E-Learning-Programs to reflect the dynamic changes occurring in this field and in practice. Strategy Professionals We investigate the role of strategists. Here, we are not only referring to corporate strategists or strategy consultants but to also every manager taking part in strategic decisions.
