Prof. Dr. Karolin Frankenberger is Chair Owner and Director of the Institute of Management & Strategy (IoMS-HSG) of the University of St. Gallen. She is also academic director of the Executive MBA HSG. Previously, she was assistant professor at the University of Lucerne and the Institute of Technology Management at the University of St.Gallen and spent almost 7 years with the management consultancy McKinsey & Company. She has written her dissertation at the Institute of Management & Strategy at the University of St. Gallen. Her research is primarily concerned with Business Model Innovation and (Digital) Business Transformation.

Prof. Dr. Karolin Frankenberger is since April 1, 2018 Ordinaria at the Institute of Management & Strategy. She is also academic director of the Executive MBA at the Executive School of Management, Technology and Law, University of St.Gallen (ES-HSG). Frankenberger received her diploma in Business Administration at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in 2000. She earned her doctorate in 2004 at the University of St.Gallen with the grade summa cum laude. The topic of her dissertation is: “The role of social context in strategy-making”, supervised by Prof. Dr. Günter Müller-Stewens and Prof. Dr. Andreas Herrmann. During her PhD, she also worked as a visiting PhD student at Harvard Business School and at the University of Connecticut. After receiving her doctorate, she switched to consulting and worked for McKinsey & Company worldwide for almost seven years. In 2011, she returned to the University of St.Gallen as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Technology Management. In 2014 she was appointed assistant professor at the same institute. During this time, she was also the head of the Competence Center Business Model Innovation, which received worldwide acclaim under her leadership. From 2016 to 2018 she was the Chair of Strategic Management at the University of Lucerne.

Research interests Business Model Innovation and Business Transformation

Prof. Frankenberger’s research focus is business model innovation and the transformation of companies. She deals with the question of how companies can develop and implement new business models in order to remain sustainable in the market. In addition, she is also increasingly concerned with the topic of sustainable business models. Frankenberger has a strong publishing activity, both in academic and in practical terms. Particularly noteworthy are Karolin Frankenberger’s article in the “Academy of Management Journal” and her book publication. Her book “Developing Business Models: 55 Innovative Concepts with the St. Gallen Business Model Navigator” has been translated into several languages ​​and is regarded as the standard work of the Business Model Innovation Literature worldwide. She also frequently appears as a key note speaker at international conferences or corporate management events on the subject.

Broad experience in teaching and executive education

Karolin Frankenberger has broad experience in teaching. For many years she has been teaching at the interface of strategy and innovation in Bachelor, Master and Executive programs at the University of St. Gallen, the University of Lucerne and the University of Zurich, and has consistently received excellent teaching evaluations. In order to meet the special requirements of executive education, she experimented with various forms of knowledge transfer. For example, she wrote four case studies and a business model card set for teaching purposes. She also has experience with in-house executive education courses.
